About Me
My name is L-Jay (26) and I currently live in Florida. I have created this website to share my personal weight loss goal of 65 pounds and counting and to also provide valuable nutritional and fitness information to those of you who are interested in living a healthier lifestyle. I am a active runner and Crossfit athlete.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, build lean muscle, or simply maintain a healthier lifestyle this site will provide you with all the information you need.
How I got started: I decided to lose weight when I was at my all time high of 265 pounds on December 19th, 2008. A normal day of eating for me consisted of bagels and coffee in the morning and fast food for lunch and dinner. I also had a constant sugar cravings, which I would satisfy with chocolate, cakes, cookies, ice cream and milkshakes.
I never really felt comfortable going out with friends, taking pictures, meeting new people or even going to school and work. My self-esteem was always low, and my health suffered severely. I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and I was borderline diabetic at age 21. It was time to make a lifestyle change.
How I did It: I followed a healthy eating regimen and portion control, I ate a wide variety of whole foods, including healthy nuts, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In addition, I eat complex carbohydrates that take longer to break down in my body and provide steady energy(oatmeal, or sweet potatoes). I avoided simple carbs such as white flour and refined sugars that can spike my blood sugar and lead to weight gain.
The biggest change was basically limiting myself to a certain group of foods. Portion size was also a major change for me. On previous “diets” I pretty much ate all that I wanted. I would pour on salad dressing until it covered the entire salad, but I taught myself to control my salad dressing portion to 2 tablespoons per serving.
And working out was also an important part of my diet, I would workout 5-6 days a week focusing primarily on cardio type workouts and would concentrate on weight training 2-3 days a week. Currently I am proud to say that I am 192 pounds and I am focusing on losing my last 12 pounds to reach my goal weight of 180 pounds. I began running and recently competed in my first 5k race on June 6th, 2010 in which I came in 2nd place.
Words of Encouragement: The key thing for me that enabled me to lose the weight was staying positive and focused. Posting pictures of your idea body type from magazines on your bedroom door or refrigerator will help to keep you motivated and your eye on the prize. Also, don’t let anyone tell you what you CANT do because you CAN, and don’t let friends influence you on breaking your eating habits because they see you doing well.
I Hope that I am able to inspire you, your family members and friends with the content provided on this website, and DONT FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE to the site on the home page. By subscribing you can stay updated on new post by me that will include informative information about living a fit and healthy lifestyle.

L-Jay,
Thanks for stopping by my blog, and wow, you look great!
I know we are strangers, but let me just say: I’m so proud of you for making healthy changes to your lifestyle and making the difficult effort to lose weight the old fashion way: through diet and exercise.
I hope that doesn’t sound condescending, but as I’m sure you also see, I see so many people complain and claim their weight and health problems are “out of their hands” or “genetically propagated.” 99% of the time, that is just not true!
I am recovering from surgery, and I wonder:
Do you know of any ab exercises I can do that don’t require the use of my pecs? I am looking for something gentle, just to get back into some routine, but I had surgery on my chest, and so am still waiting for the incisions to heal.
Thanks again for checking out my blog, and continued luck to you to reach your weight goals!
-Eli
Thank you ELi for taking the time to provide such positive feedback about the blog! I am glad you enjoyed reading it! As far as the ab workouts, I would suggest probably just taking it easy for now since you just finished surgery. I know many doctors will recommend no physical exercise for a specific time frame after surgery. It will probably be best to consult with your doc first. However there are a few ab exercises you can do that doesnt require pec movements such as the leg raises and leg drops, scissors, and hip lifts. If you are unfamiliar with these movements, try typing them into youtube to see some demonstrations. I will also be posting more ab workout videos in the future!! Good luck and have a speedy recovery.
Thanks for the tips, and yes, my girlfriend has reminded me to sit on my ass for at least another week, lol.

Hey thanks for the nomination! I am glad you enjoyed reading the blog. Tall to you soon
You are smart to start so young. I got married at 21 Fat and happy by 24 and stayed that way for 43 years. Changing was a struggle and I lost a lot of my ability to focus on desk work but at least I beat my stroke which only lasted for an hour and no it wasn’t a TAI. I hope you know you have made a lifestyle change and while you may change what you eat and how you excercise, always remember that cardio and portion control are imperative for controlling weight.
Thank you for sharing your story with us! I am glad you decided to turn your lifestyle around as well. All the best to you! Stay motivated an focus!! Have a great weekend
This blog is fantastic! I just committed to healthy living and weight loss two months ago. Thanks for following my blog. I plan to be a frequent visitor to this blog as a place for information and inspiration.
Hi! I’m seeing a dietitian now and through writing down on a table the things I ate throughout the day, I found that I ate more than three times a day–not small portions, either–and at the many things I did eat had more than 40% fat! How did I know? I eat food from McDonald’s, Tim Horton’s. Can you believe that a large sized coffee with four creams and three sugar is close to 600 calories? It is! And because of the cream the % is way more than the daily recommended. So now, I’m controlling my portion. Of course, this week, yesterday I celebrated my b-day (but it’s on June 16) with fish and chips, an alcoholic drink, then two glasses of water. Of course, before eating this stuff (at Fionn MacCool’s) I brisk walked for three hours. If you have a time to look at the June 15 post…these are the pics and vids I took while walking. It was a sunny and specially hot day and excellent for walking. I have to lose 55 pounds of fat to be 155 pounds which I need to be in order to fit into orthotics. I’m glad that you lost the weight and if I have self-control over portions and the fat that I eat, I just might make it this year. Congratulations! You’re looking at your best! 5K race! Wow! It takes a lot to commit to it…then there’s the diet, hydration, and rest to think about. But none of these things seem to be an issue for you since I’m getting from what you’re saying is that you have all the knowledge you need to get there. Me, now with the dietitian and then the social worker for my emotional eating habits, I will be on my way to, I hope, never overeat again. To be 155 pounds until, I guess, I’m 100 years old.
You will do great your goal. It will be a journey for your to discover mental challenges and self control. Stay motivated and positive and you will surely reach them. Feel free to email me anytime for chat, motivation or advice. Ljayhealth@gmail.com……it is nice to meet you. Let’s make great things happen!!!
Dude — EXCELLENT JOB!!! Keep it up…I’m right behind you!
Thanks Greenbeanboy. What are your goals?
180 without losing muscle mass.
Hi there! Thank you for liking my post and following my blog. =) I applaud you greatly for losing the vast amount of weight and continuing to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also wonderful that you are taking the time to provide help and encouragement to others looking to do the same. Our country is in the middle of an obesity epidemic, and it is only continuing to get worse. We need more individuals like yourself motivating others to live a healthy lifestyle. Do you work out with partners, or do you do you stay motivated yourself? Even as a medical student, I find it tough to stay motivated to find time to exercise, even when I understand all the health risks of not sticking with a daily exercise plan. Again, congrats! I look forward to more posts from you! =)
Thank you for the positive feedback Ryan!! It is greatly appreciated
I usually do both, work out with a group and by myself. I am self motivated but whenever I get a chance to workout with someone or a group I jump on that opportunity. My best advice to stay motivated is to allow yourself to understand that you owe it to your body to take care of it and make sure it is working properly. Our bodies should be our first priorities and they are our temple. The greatest gift you can give yourself is a healthy and long lasting body. It took me a while to understand this, but we get so caught up in work, school, our families and society that we forget to take care of ourself first. Once you get in the habit of working out regularly your body will get use to it and expect you to do it all the time! You will get there strive more and more each day. Keep up the good job in med school!!

Hello and well done, what a great achievement. I am very pleased that you visited me today and gave me the opportunity to hear your story. I look forward to seeing your progress. What an inspiring story!! I have some close friends who were borderline diabetic, and they also felt inspired to lose weight for overall wellness. So glad you took the initiative to work on your overall wellness, too. We all deserve to be good to ourselves! Congratulations!
And I am trying to lose weight, too. I gained 15-20 pounds during some big exams for my PhD program, and now I’m in the slight “overweight” category for my frame–eeek! I don’t like that! I’m working on it!
WOW! I am glad that your friends reversed their health dangers. Well congrats on passing your PhD exams! The best advice that I can give is drink lots of water, try and eat veggies at every meal and cut back on processed foods and sugar! Let me know If I can help in anyway. Good luck!
You’re an inspiration; great blog!

Jay …. You are a great inspiration to all. Thank you for sharing your journey. It proves that we can do anything we set our mind to do.
Attitude is our best friend or worst enemy. You clearly have a strong positive attitude and didn’t let anything stop you from achieving your goal. I used to run daily to keep fit and also took dance classes. Unfortunately, my current job doesn’t allow for much of a work/life balance and so my keeping fit (well that’s a lie, more keeping slim) relies on my willpower to eat little. Not good I know but they say, ‘Every day do something that will INCH you closer to a better tomorrow’. Maybe my way of doing this is pants, but I still achieve my goal. Well done to you
Thank you very much for the feedback. Yes and you are right its all in our attitude. We have to want to do it and be motivated to never give up!! I wish you all the best, and I need to talk to your job and tell them to give you more free time
Hey L-Jay!
For a moment I thought you had hijacked mah blog!…. Bwa ha ha ha!

Hi L-Jay,
Thanks for visiting my blog. Congratulations on this journey of yours! You are inspiring. I look forward to reading more posts. On a side note, I’ve been wanting to try CrossFit for awhile now. Hopefully I can make it happen in the fall. Have a great day.
Kristy
L-Jay… you are an inspiring young man. Best of all your story will help so many others. It’s a wonderful thing that you set up this blog to reach out to so many people who will follow your lead. When you reach your goal, don’t let it be the end of your journey, but the beginning. Good health, running and helping others will bring you joy for life. Stay well, my friend.
Thank you so much for the advice Jim, I appreciate it. I couldnt imagine stopping once I reach my goal. Thank you liking the blog. Talk to you soon!
Thanks for the like. Love your story & thanks for giving back.
Thanks so much for following my blog. What an amazing journey you’re on. I look forward to following along. Keep going!!
Hello L-Jay. I am new at this blogging thing. I was surprised to see your comments on my site. Like you I am developing a new lifestyle. I am pre-pre-diabetic. It runs in my family. My sugar count was elevated this year and I was told to “watch” what I eat. That was not good enough for me, So I am eliminating the processed foods and concentrating on the complex carbs. I will stop by from time to time to get inspiration frrom you!
Hey L-Jay, thanks for following my blog. What you did is pretty amazing, I’ve seen people in television shows who had their own personal trainers etc, and still had a very hard time. It’s really cool you could do that on your own!
Thanks for following my blog. Yours is really inspiring – you look (and must feel) amazing!
AWESOME story!!!You have inspired me to overcome challenges I do face now (sprained hip flexor and psoas muscles) that I have been battling for 2 months now, (which I cannot run now for awhile
) thank you for the extra encouragement by understanding you can do anything to be healthy and happy no matter what your situation is, and have other avenues to overcome your obstacles!
First, sorry to hear about your injury I have been there many of times. The feeling you get when you cannot perform a certain workout that you love can be a little depressing. But stay strong and know that you will recover soon. Second, thank you for taking the time to share and provide feedback. Let me know how you do with your recovery
Thank you soo much L-Jay, you are a great leader of fitness! Recovery is touch and go..getting better on days I think consciously about what my body shouldn’t do, but sometimes I want to break out in a dance..so, yeah..that screws things up..LOL
Courtney
Thanks for stopping by and following my blog. I too want to hit the magic number of 180. I know you will reach it just like me.
Keep up the great work!
Yes! We will get to it.
First of all, congratulations on defining your goal, setting, and reaching it! I love your common sense approach to food. I believe “diets” have completely undone America’s eating patterns. Most diet plans are nutty, focused on total avoidance of certain foods rather than on balanced enjoyment of what we eat. Portion control Boy, that’s a biggy. (oops.) And so hard to do in the Super-sized market. Just the act of measuring portions is important. I’m glad you brought up salad dressing. I don’t usually use much of it, but really I don’t know how much…time to get the measuring spoons out!
That’s a fantastic journey you’ve been on, and awesome that you have taken the time to wrtite about, and to inspire others…
Thank you! It has been a long one but fun and exciting at the same time!
Thanks for dropping by to my blog L-Jay – your story is inspirational, well done and all the best for the future.

Hi L-Jay
thanks for following my blog, you’ve written some great posts. Like the videos too, articulate and humble, a winning combination in my mind. Wife got me a video camera for Christmas so I can post some videos, only problem is I’m a like a cross between Wolverine and Jake the poacher from Withnail and I, and that’s on a good day. I guess I just need to find my niche.
Thanks a lot! Yea everyone is different. Once you find what you are passionate about it will make you comfortable in your videos! Everything else will fall in place. A tripod will help as well.
Hi,
thank you for visiting my blog and following and thus giving me the opportunity to find yours. Your story is a motivation and I really like the style you put information out here for us. Keep it up and congratulations,

Hi L-Jay – Thank you for following my blog. Looking through yours it’s quite impressive to see what you have accomplished. Good luck with your marathon later this month.
Good for you! It’s nice to see another Jags fan! I live in Montana and I think I’m the only one for 100 miles.
Hahaha. I grew up there so it’s like my flagship team. How are things in Montana?
I grew up in North Florida and lived in St. Augustine for a little while. Montana is cold right now, but so far it’s a pretty good ski season.
Very nice! Do you ski at all? I would like to try that one day.
L-Jay thank you for stopping by our site and following Ancestreats. Looks like you’re marathon is right around the corner! Good luck. As you’ve gone on your journey, we imagine you may have to update family recipes to fit in with your healthy living. We welcome you to share a family fav with the Ancestreats community.

Thank you for stopping by my blog! You have a very nice blog going on and your story is rather inspirational! I am a runner myself (competed in college and continued on since), but never did crossfit. I have heard so much about crossfit that I am so tempted to try it. Does it interfere with your running at all or on the contrarily makes you a stronger runner?
L-Jay I just wanted to thank you for stopping by my site! Your story is truly inspiring and its always great to find other people who have similar interest! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for stopping by my site and the like l-Jay! You should be very proud of yourself, to achieve what most want but only few make real! Good for you! The only advice I have for you is, DON’T STOP! Once you do it’s so hard to get it back!
